Navigation 01

OPENING QUESTION: Please take a few moments to download a protractor app to your chromies (I'll show you the one I use, but I'm thinking a 360o tool would be better! Let's see if we can find one of those)

LEARNING GOAL FOR TODAY: I will be able to set a basic navigational course during today's class

WORDS O' THE DAY:

  • Navigation: ("controlling the movement of a plane from one place to another")

WORK O' THE DAY:

Let's start with a few basics:

Beginning from Tacoma Narrows Airport:

Use the tools in Google Earth to find the direct distance to Astoria, Oregon.

Now use your protractor tool to find the course (direction).

Compare your answers with your group!

═══════════════════════════

Now determine the speed your Cessna will be flying during that time (what considerations do you need to keep in mind?)

Now please compute the time it will take to get to Astoria from Tacoma Narrows Airport

═══════════════════════════

Using the big board, let's have each person select a city for our air trip to Spokane.

Now each person needs to plot a course from their city to the next city.

Let's see how we did using a real pilot's map of Washington State!

═══════════════════════════

After that, we'll check our route to see if it is legal (What does THAT mean???)

We'll probably need to plot some course corrections!
